I doubt that both my trackball and keyboard have mechanical issues related to F8. I've looked through my keyboard and accessibility preferences to make sure there is not something else going on, and all looks good. The only way to get out of it is to press some other F key and hope it gets out of the smart tool, or cycle tools with the ESC key. Repeatedly pressing F8 should cycle through the various grabber tools, but instead it stays in the smart tool. This is inconsistent behaviour as sometimes it works as it's supposed to. The same thing happens when I don't use the mouse and use the F8 key only.
However, now half the time it selects the smart tool instead.
